Welcome to the home page of the Central Wyoming Model Railroad Association, located in the heart of the Intermountain West along the shores of the North Platte River in the beautiful city of Casper, Wyoming.
The CWMRA was organized as a club in 1987 and incorporated in 2004. Members met and held informal work sessions at various locations around town until a permanent clubhouse was leased in 1995. The limited amount of space quickly became an issue, and larger, more suitable quarters were sought. Through a very generous arrangement with the Riverside Mobile Home Park, CWMRA moved into its present building in 1999 and built the first permanent layouts in HO, N, and O scale. There are On3 tracks provided for the narrow gauge enthusiasts, as well as 3-rail AC in O scale for the Lionel crowd.
As nice as the old HO layout was it had significant flaws that needed to be addressed, despite several major and minor overhauls. Repairs and modifications went on for several years, but it became more and more obvious that drastic measures were called for. The aisles were too narrow for train operators and spectators to move around freely, the lighting was poor, the sight lines and vistas were limited, and the electrical control system was antiquated and completely inadequate. So, it was decided to rework the entire layout and build again from scratch. Meetings were held, ideas were pondered and discussed, and a new plan was formulated and put into action. The old layout was demolished and work on the present layout began in 2008. That work continues to this day. The aisles were widened and re-oriented. They are completely handicap-accessible and provide plenty of room for operators and spectators alike. Step stools are available around the room to provide that overall 'birds-eye' view and insure that 'little persons' can enjoy the trains. The old DC power pack operating system has been replaced with a new state-of-the-art Digital Command and Control (DCC) system, which allows operators and engineers to follow and 'drive' their trains around the layout, and which provides more life-like prototypical speeds and movements. Plus, many DCC-equipped trains contain tiny digital speakers that produce realistic operational sounds (bells, whistles, horns, steam, huff, chuff . . . you name it!).
The clubhouse has a conference room/lounge for meetings and work sessions, and there is an extensive reference library including books, magazines, DVDs, and VHS tapes. And plenty of off street parking out front. So relax . . . enjoy . . . stick around . . . we're glad you're here.
If you have a questions about model railroading, please stop by; visitors are always welcome. If we can't answer your question, we may know someone who can. Just as the layouts and clubhouse are changing, so is this website. Check back from time to time and get the latest news and information as well as useful links to model railroading activities and other events in and around Central Wyoming and the Intermountain West.
